Hello everyone!
Sorry for taking this long to get started – firs 2 months where VERY intense.
And sorry for English, I don’t have Russian keyboard.
To get us started I have to say that Harvard exceeded all my expectations and my time here was amazing! And this is just the beginning!
Now as for your questions:
1. Dmitriy. Thank you, but out of 3 Ukrainians here 2 are from Odessa I hope you will be the third. The only person in Odessa who I know is Ludmila Stolyarova, tel. 7155693. She works for US advising center. I didn’t use her help but (in terms of GMAT and essays) but she is the only one I could think of. I was preparing for GMAT myself. As for the essays there are online services who can help you.
2. Alina. Yes HBS had contacted people who wrote my recommendations. Besides recommendations, after you had been admitted, school hires international background screening agency KROLL which checks last two companies on your resume. The basically check whether you in fact worked there, your position and salary. Usually it is just a call but if they cannot reach the company they request some proving documents.
3. Svitlana. LLM – what is it? As for loans and scholarships:
- Almost everyone who is asking for a financial help receives some kind of scholarship. Its amount is determined individually basing on the information about your past income, family status and other information. Usually it is between 10 and 25 thousands per year without any obligations from your side.
- Everyone who is admitted is guaranteed a loan of up to 150 000 minus scholarships. They faced some troubles this year because of the crisis, but I think they have solved them.
4. Tatiana. In order to get into Harvard you need desire and persistence. Everything else is just a result of mentioned characteristics.
5. Nina. The average age is 27. I was surprised that the deviation from this age is quiet small – most of people are in fact 27. There are some younger people 22 -24 (1%) but all of them are somewhat outstanding. I know one student who is 22 but his GMAT is 800. On the other hand it means that you have to start early. I would suggest starting applying at the age of 22. There is one risk associated with starting early with Harvard. There is a rumor that you have less chances being admitted by Harvard if you where rejected in the previous year. I know one student here who waited for 1 year after being rejected and applied one year after. How real is this rumor I don’t know.
Dear Alexander,
There are two types of students from the former Soviet Union:
1. The ones who where bon in USSR and moved abroad and then got into HBS.
2. The ones who lived in ex USSR countries and applied from there.
Overall there are about 40 Russian-speaking students in both years (both 1 and 2 category). Speaking about second category, there are about 15. 50% Russia, 20% Ukraine 30% - other. I am the only one from Ukraine this year. I’ve talked to people from admissions about this and they said that there are very few applications from our country. So GO FOR IT!
Hello Arma.
1. Essays.
I recommend starting from buying a book on essay writing. There are several books about essay writing tips. You can buy them either on Amazon or electronic versions on Zinio. Those books will give you general ideas about the structure and format. Unfortunately I can’t recommend any specific one since it was a while ago, but I am sure you can find it on the web.
Then I would study the school you are applying to – what they look for in a candidate, their focus and mission.
Then I would study the essay questions and look at them all together. I think all of your essays should make a coherent story when combined together. For example the essay about your future goals should be coherent to what you did in the past. And the essay about something in your past should show some action which you’ve taken to achieve your goals. There are a lot of tips on that issue on the web. I recommend this site http://clearadmit.com/ . I think they have analysis of each schools essay questions ant their opinion on what schools look for.
Then I would think a lot about yourself as a person – past experience, interesting situations, roles you’ve taken and your goals. Probably this is the hardest and the most important part. I was surprised how little I understand about myself before I did this. It is a journey of self-reflection and self-discovery. You have to understand clearly who you are, why you are the way you are and who you want to be in the future.
After you’ve studied the school and yourself you have to use the essay questions to tell “your” story to the school. That story should fit the chosen school. After reading your essays admission person has to understand who you are, why you need the school and what you can contribute to the ones you study with.
After finishing your essays try to find a friend or several friends who know you and are able to tell whether you where able to show you personality. Ask them to comment your essays. I found the advice of my friends helpful.
Some of the people I know used online services which help perfecting the essays. They found it useful.
Finally, overall advice would be: Know yourself and show yourself through your essays and work on them until you are sure that you cannot make them any better.
2. Age.
It is true that the majority of the students is around 27 though I wouldn’t say that there is an age limit. I think that there are about 15% of the students older than 29. I would attribute it to the fact that the older you get the harder it is for you to explain to the school what you did all that time and why only now you decided to get an MBA. If your story is convincing I don’t think you should worry about how old you are.
Dear gl,
It is unusual for an HBS student to be as young as 22-24. Usually it is exceptional students who have done some form research or internship during their undergrad years. I know two people who are that young:
One of them was a winner of Toyota selection contest. In that contest Toyota selects several young students across the country and trains them in different departments for several years combining it with university education.
The second was participating in stem-cells research in his university.
The main criterion for HBS in selecting its students is whether candidate’s experience is valuable for other students. It is very hard, but possible for person who is 22 to have such an experience.
The percentage of ex-entrepreneurs is not very big (10-15%). But HBS is very interested in that kind of people. Being an entrepreneur would be an advantage while applying to HBS. Entrepreneurship is the best example of leadership and they are looking for leaders.
To be an entrepreneur and to have a corporate experience is even less usual.
As for your profile, overall it looks interesting. But I have to say that it is more about what you have achieved doing it, how you demonstrated your leadership abilities, how you learned from mistakes etc. In general, it is not about spending several years here or there and it is not about age. It is more about the stories you select for your essays and how good they show your advantages to the school. Theoretically if you had your own business you should have more exiting stories to tell then some other candidate with less exciting job.
The fact that you where selected by PWC is good, but by itself doesn’t tell anything about your achievements. They love “stories” not facts.
Dear YS,
I would love to meet you, show you around and take you with me to classes. E-mail me at dpasko@mba2010.hbs.edu and we will set it up.
I am sorry Alexander,
But the goal of this blog is to help people in the process of applying to business schools. I don’t think that your questions are relevant in this case.
Best regards,
Dan
Hello NA,
My situation was somewhat unique. Usually recommendation letters are written by your supervisors but since I was an entrepreneur I didn’t have direct supervisors. I decided to get recommendation letters from parties representing several aspects of my business:
1. From a VP of sales of a US company from which my company was buying films. He basically was elaborating on my negotiation skills and ability to communicate with foreign partners.
2. My partner in business who started a company with me. He was commenting my leadership abilities within the company.
3. Program director of one Ukrainian TV stations whish was our client and who bought content from my company. She was mostly commenting the quality of our services and the way we organize our business.
I would advise to choose people not based on their status but based on what new positive information they can provide about you.
Harvard.
Thank you Katia
Agree with all that had been said above. Usually GPA of Eastern European students is higher than students from other countries due to conversion from “5 balnoi” system. Unless you had mostly “3” in your previous university I wouldn’t worry about GPA. But if you did have mostly “3” I would address this issue somewhere in your application documents or essays. You can even use it as an advantage describing what difficulties you had to overcome during your previous education which unfortunately influenced your grades. Good luck!
1. The goal of background screening is not to catch you on something but to check the reality. Usual checking process is conducted by phone – they call your HR manager and ask him to confirm your information orally. Even if the discrepancy is found they will let you explain the situation. As I know they are reasonable in that respect and can let you provide any documents (letters, spravki etc.) which can support the information you’ve stated.
On the other hand you don’t want this extra risks and problems. In order to avoid that situation you have to make sure that the person they might call will confirm your real position and not the one stated on paper.
As for your recommenders, I don’t think they check their background.
2. As for the age, I wouldn’t think about it too much. It is just a number. More important are the stories you tell about yourself in the essays. Somebody at the age of 23 can be more mature and have better life experience than a 35 year old person. Usually people in developing countries (ex USSR) are facing life hardships in a much younger age than somebody who lived in developed country and graduated from university at 23 and worked for 2 years on a boring job. If you are managing a department in a company you should have enough interesting experiences to tell about your career. Use it and don’t think too much about formalities like age.
1. Well, I think extracurricular activities are important. Weather work experience can outweigh absence of extracurricular act. is questionable. In this respect I can advise you two things:
- On one of MBA advising web sites I saw a good remark about your question “If you don’t have enough non work activities – go out and start doing something, right now”. I think any person can select any area that is more or less interesting to him and devote 1 hour a week to it. If you do it for the period until submission deadline you will be able write at least something. And don’t forget – playing football with friends is also extracurricular activity. I am not advising you to make things up but be creative about it.
- The other advice is to try to turn your weaknesses into strengths. Lets assume you can’s say anything about extracurricular activities because you where dedicating time to your family. The way you tell it in the blog you are describing it as an excuse, which doesn’t add you any points. It can be changed if you if you will describe it as your advantage. Razing a family at such a young age, especially if you have kids is an amazing achievement. Don’t forget that marrying at a young age is very uncommon in US; most of Americans marry after 30. If you can tell a good story about your view of importance of family to a society, and that you where investing your time and energy into creating it at a young age, you will add yourself a lot of “points”. This story can outweigh any problems with activities much better than your working experience.
2. As for the optional part, it depends on how the question is worded. If it says something like “Explain your weaknesses” then you are doomed to make excuses for yourself. Overall I think that excuses don’t help you at all. If it is an open-ended ended question like “tell us whatever you want” then the situation is better. From my perspective you should use optional essay to tell more strengths about yourself. I would advise to make two lists before starting your essays:
- List of your personal strengths and achievements
- List of whatever you think school is looking for in a candidate.
After all your mandatory essays are done you will probably have several good personal stories which you where not able to fit into previous assays. Use your optional essays to tell those stories. Try to find some good storyline that allows you to tell several more good things about yourself and convey them in the final essay.
Final one sentence advice is: Try to turn your weaknesses into your strengths, which will allow using optional essay to tell more good things about you.
Good luck!
Особое спасибо за “playing football with friends is also extracurricular activity” и новый взгляд на мой семейный опыт.
Privet Dmitry,
S udovolstviem pomogu zemlyaku:)
1. Perspektivi - your career path meets most of the needed criteria for HBS. Given normal GMAT and Toefl all will depend on how you will present your personality in the essays and the interview.
2. Admissions would be less interested in the position itself then in the things you actually achieved doing whatever you did. The title of the position especially held in such an organization as retail bank in Ukraine would not impress/discourage anyone. What actually matters is what you achieved in the position you held: optimized operations; led teams; motivated people; established relationships with clients; introduced new ideas etc. = created value for your organization. Theoretically if you hold a higher position you have more opportunities to demonstrate needed achievements but it doesn’t mean that holding lower position you are deprived of chances of doing so. Such formalities as names of positions are much less important than the stories you tell about your actual achievements in the essays.
3. Don’t be bothered by issues related to financing your MBA education at this point. Most top MBA programs have very well developed financial support series which take care of situation like yours. If you get admitted the school will help you secure needed financing. And after you graduate most post MBA salaries will allow you to easily repay your loans. Right now focus on getting admitted and, take my word for it, if you succeed you will find a way to finance your education.
Good Luck Odessa!:)
Dear Andrej,
Let me start by saying that all the schools have their own financial aid programs so everything which is mentioned below is applicable only to HBS.
1. Loan is guaranteed by the school if you are admitted. If you apply for fin aid (loan) the money is disbursed automatically and you don’t do anything at all. First repayment starts only after you graduate.
2. “Discount” is not the right word, it is Fellowship. Sometimes Fellowship money is added to your loan package thus reducing your future debt burden. The amount of fellowship is determined individually by Finaid office and is based on their perception of your current financial position. For example if you need 100 000 $ they provide you 80 000 loan and 20 000 Fellowship which you don’t have to return.
3. Job search is a crucial part of MBA education. There are several organizations which help students find internships and full time jobs.
Career Services is the main one organizing: resume books; Industry weeks; company visits; personal career coaching; on campus interviews; company presentations and career fairs. Industry clubs also organize a lot of career related activities: industry focused resume books; career trips and company visits; presentations.
Some companies themselves are very active and come to campus to look for students interested in joining them.
There is a special web page called “Job Bank” where companies post their announcements related to hiring interns and full time professionals.
In other words, school does everything it can to help students find the job they want.
4. There are several grant possibilities I know of. “Muskie” is the annual program which sponsors students from different countries. MBA Strategy also started a program which provides grants to MBA students from Eastern Europe.
But as I mentioned already in the previous postings I don’t think you should worry about financing your MBA education. Most of good schools help students who need financial support find it. Focus on getting admitted and if you are I am sure you will find a way to finance your education.
Uspehov!
Thank you for the info you are providing, I find it very helpful
I have an unusual question, I guess. Me and my wife are planning to apply to HBS in 2012. Thus does HBS has some policies on joint applications. I understand that applying jointly will substantially lower our chances to get in together, but 2 years appart is not an option for us. Moreover we have quite a similar backgrounds, although with good achievments, which further worsens our chances.
I will much appreciate your comments and any thoughts on the matter.
Dear Dmitry,
joint applications are encouraged by HBS. Although officially school states that both people will go through independent selection process and their decisions are not correlated unofficially school supports applying couples. There were several admitted partners in my year. In any case I would not treat it as a disadvantage. And its ok to have similar background.
Dear Alina,
Most graduate (master) schools are 2 year programs.

July 12th, 2008 at 7:35 am

Danil, s kakogo vozrasta postupaut v Harvard Business school?
November 3rd, 2008 at 11:34 am
November 8th, 2008 at 12:08 am
Good luck everyone!

December 9th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Danil, congrats on getting into HBS! Was wondering if it’s possible to meet with you in the spring of 2009 (I plan a visit to the campus)?

December 15th, 2008 at 11:04 am
http://www.hbs.edu/mba/admissions/costsummary.html

Hello Arma.
January 21st, 2009 at 8:55 am

February 2nd, 2009 at 12:01 am
Dear gl,
It is unusual for an HBS student to be as young as 22-24.
February 17th, 2009 at 1:50 pm

Hello NA,
My situation was somewhat unique.

July 6th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
Hello Andrei,
Sorry for such a late reply.
Good luck!
July 7th, 2009 at 11:45 am
July 16th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
Dear Andrei,
Good luck!
July 17th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Особое спасибо за “playing football with friends is also extracurricular activity” и новый взгляд на мой семейный опыт.

Sorry Urik,
I have limited information about Kennedy School of Government.
January 7th, 2010 at 3:52 pm
January 18th, 2010 at 1:03 pm

Uspehov!

Hi Daniil,
Thank you for the info you are providing, I find it very helpful
I have an unusual question, I guess. Me and my wife are planning to apply to HBS in 2012. Thus does HBS has some policies on joint applications. I understand that applying jointly will substantially lower our chances to get in together, but 2 years appart is not an option for us. Moreover we have quite a similar backgrounds, although with good achievments, which further worsens our chances.
I will much appreciate your comments and any thoughts on the matter.
Best Regards,

Dear Dmitry,
joint applications are encouraged by HBS. Although officially school states that both people will go through independent selection process and their decisions are not correlated unofficially school supports applying couples. There were several admitted partners in my year. In any case I would not treat it as a disadvantage. And its ok to have similar background.
Dear Alina,
Most graduate (master) schools are 2 year programs.
